Hello, In February 2008 a new rule went into effect for the early series Spec Miatas. We are now allowed to replace the existing "shockhats" with those designed for the 1999 and later cars. To many, this may not seem like a big deal, however, when you consider that this one change more than doubles the amount of suspension travel, especially in the rear, this is huge. On tracks where, due to varying surface conditions, these cars spent most of their time riding on the bumpstops, now the suspension is allowed to work as it should, which means far better handling and, of course, faster lap times. While experiencing these huge improvements in the race cars we got to thinking about what improvements could be gained by installing these "shockhats" in street driven Miatas. We installed several sets in vehicles equipped with both the stock spring/shocks as well as aftermarket suspension systems. On the cars equipped with a stock suspension, these shockhats lower the car just a bit over an inch (normally). This results in a lower center of gravity which greatly improves handling, cornering in particular. But, unlike lowering the car with lowering springs, suspension travel remains the same as a stock height vehicle. No suspension travel is lost even though the car is now an inch lower. When we installed these shockhats in a street car with an adjustable aftermarket suspension system, the owner has the option of lowering the car even more or maintaining the existing ride height with the increased suspension travel experienced in the race cars, making this a real win/win situation for both the track and the street. We would like to talk with you about the benefits of this modification for either your street or race car. Give us a call today to learn more. Regards, | ![]() |
